September is Deaf Awareness Month, and we kicked it off by hosting the “Words that Shape Worlds” networking breakfast, organised by DEAFinition NPC and generously sponsored by eDeaf, Ciro, Cognizance Data Insights and Skills Town.
A star-studded cast of guests and speakers gathered at the Rewardsco campus on Durban’s Umhlanga Ridge to discuss the importance of deaf awareness and the need to create more opportunities for deaf people in the workplace.
The event, hosted by DEAFinition NPC, featured keynote speeches from Aviwe Gemane, Director of DEAFinition NPC; Cindy Norcott, motivational speaker and author; Gcina Mhlope, journalist, poet, playwright, and storyteller; and Kevin Hardy, Managing Director of SkillsTown South Africa.
The speakers shared their heartfelt personal stories and celebrated the many achievements of the Deaf community despite facing significant hurdles. They also discussed the importance of South African Sign Language (SASL) and the need for greater inclusion of Deaf people in all aspects of society and in the workplace.
The event was a powerful reminder of the need to raise awareness of deafness and to create a more inclusive world for Deaf people. It was also a celebration of the many accomplishments of Deaf people and a call to action for everyone to work together to create a more just and equitable society.
